Senior Parents and Students,

In anticipation of an exciting graduation experience for all of our students, I want to take this opportunity to provide families with an update to the process used to notify us of a student’s intent to wear cultural or religious adornments with their graduation uniform.  Linked (HERE) is a form by which students/families can inform our school of any graduation adornments the graduating student may want to wear during the ceremony.

Below is a list of items that have been presumptively approved as cultural or religious graduation adornment.  Requested items already on the presumptively approved list can receive an expedited process by our staff. Responses to adornment requests not on our presumptively approved list may require additional time to affirm, and we encourage students/families to return cultural adornment forms early (due 14 days prior to their graduation ceremony).  Items worn under the gown, such as cultural/religious necklaces/jewelry, clothing, or footwear, will not need a form completed in advance of graduation ceremonies.

The following academic adornments provided by the District may be worn by students during the graduation ceremony: CSF Gold Cord, CSF Life Pin, Top 20 Medallion, Civic Learning Medallion, National Honor Society Sash and AVID sash. Additionally, a student may wear tribal, religious or cultural adornments consistent with Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 5127. “Cultural” means recognized practices and traditions of a certain group of people. “Adornment” means either (i) something attached to, worn with, or worn in place of, the cap customarily worn at school graduation ceremonies; or (ii) something attached to or worn with, but not replacing, the gown customarily worn at school graduation ceremonies.

The District reserves the right to limit items of adornment that are likely to cause a substantial disruption of, or material interference with, the graduation ceremony. Adornments displaying language, symbols, or imagery that promote hate, violence, discrimination, or disrupt the ceremony or event are not permitted. Additional information will be provided at upcoming graduation/senior meetings.

Additionally, all Gateway students must meet the following qualifications to be able to participate in the graduation ceremony:

•        Complete all work by Tuesday, May 26, 2026 (white card day)

Incomplete/non-passing work will prevent a student

from participating in the graduation ceremony.

•        Complete all stipulations required in the SSSA disposition by

Tuesday, May 26, 2026

•        Comply with CUSD dress code.

•        Have all CUSD financial obligations cleared or have made alternative arrangements to resolve them.

We are looking forward to an amazing ceremony celebrating the collective accomplishments of our 2026 seniors at the Mercedes Edwards Theater, on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 6:00pm (Doors open at 5:15pm)
